A Reconciliation and Pure Pennsylvania

Before I say anything else, I must tell you all that I have reconciled with my hair.  We are on speaking terms again.  My Mom suggested that I part my hair on the side rather than in the middle like a big dork and after a few days of playing with it, I kind of like it. (Don't worry, she didn't call me a big dork.  She has in the past, but not this time.  Love you Mom!)  Our family celebrated Easter on Saturday since the hubs and I work on Sundays, so I actually put on nice clothes, did my hair, and *gasp* put on make-up.  Saturday night I looked in the mirror and said, for the first time since the infamous cut, "Hey, my hair looks pretty good."  So that's my first bit of good news.  Yeah!  I no longer cringe when I look in the mirror and am actually starting to like the hair.

Second bit of good news...some of my hair stuff is being sold in an actual store!!  Pure Pennsylvania is a store where people can pick up the merchandise, touch it, and try it on.  It's a really great little shop.  They sell lots of beautiful things made by local people, locally produced food, and they have a quilt shop built right in!!!  Check out their Facebook page and give them some love.  I'm very excited to have this opportunity.  It was one of my goals for this year!!  I'm a little upset with myself for not getting pictures of everything I took over, but I did get a few of the headbands that went, even if they're not the greatest pictures ever.

This one is my favorite.  It's very vintage looking.  The hair...not bad!
You can see the piece a little better in this one.  The orange flower I made from a leftover piece of wired ribbon.  The other two are from fabrics.
Ignore my robe, I was cold.  Focus on the headband...and the hair.  This one was embellished with old earrings and some crystals.  The brown and teal fabric is vintage.  The flower in the middle is made from wired ribbon.
The center rosette on this headband has a vintage earring attached.
Seems like a pretty good start to me.  What do you all think about the headbands?  The hair's looking much better, isn't it?

Dr. Who Season 6 Premiere!!!

Season 6 of Dr. Who starts in 11 minutes.  The hubs and I are on the couch with my youngest sister.  We are all HUGE Dr. Who nerds.  I cannot WAIT for this season to start.  Just thought you all should know.  Any other Dr. Who fans out there???  Are you watching?  Did you watch?  What do you think of Matt Smith as the Doctor?  We love him, and the Amy Pond/Rory companion combination makes me ridiculously happy.  Ooh, time to go, only 8 minutes left!!!

Oops, That's a Cupcake...

This morning I had to get dog food on the way home from work so my poor pups don't starve.  Somehow a package of these made it into my cart...
Well, not those exactly....but cupcakes.  Red Velvet mini cupcakes.  I'm almost, but not quite, ashamed to admit that at least 2 of them didn't make it home.

Now, I must go rest up for Easter weekend with the fam.  This week has been busy with errand running, hair stuff making, and training for work on top of work itself.  I have a great opportunity to put some of my hair stuff into a little quilt/gift shop locally, so I've been working like mad to get stuff done.  And that is why I deserve the cupcakes!!!

P.S.--I'm starting to get used to my haircut AND find ways to wear it that don't gross me out.  w00t!!

More Shabby Chic Book Wreath Love!

Well, after I finished the bird wreath, I still had a bit of ribbon left over.  I wanted to make another wreath soooo bad, but all the forms I have were too big for the leftover ribbon.  Then, I remembered I still had one wooden ring left over from this thrifting trip:
Perfect size!!!  Instead of a birdcage for this wreath, I printed out a crown from *The Graphics Fairy*, and I used a butterfly instead of birds.
I had to add some flowers and leaves from my stash to complement the flowers thrifted from the Salvo frame, but not too many.
And here they are together:
I think they turned out great!!!  It surprised me how quickly I put them together.  Projects like this usually take me much longer because I mess around on the computer too much work slowly and carefully.  Do you like them?  Or are they too fru fru?

From Salvo to Shabby Chic in One Weekend

First, before I talk about the awesome wreaths I made this weekend, I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone that commented on the post about my haircut.  I promise that I didn't write it for people to feel sorry for me, I was just being honest.  Maybe you're right and I'll figure out a way to do it that won't make me feel like a dork.  No, I WILL figure out a way to wear it that doesn't make me feel like a dork.  I have to.  I'm a dork, there's no doubt about that, but I don't need to LOOK like one.  So {{{Hugs}}} to all of you for helping me feel better.  Oh, and Carmella, I have, in fact, been told that I look like Julia Roberts before. Especially by my Mom.  Love you Mom!!

Okay, down to business.  On Wednesday I went to the Salvation Army to do some thrifting.  I'm not sure why I keep going there, their prices are out of control, but don't get me started on that topic.  Anyway, I found a small wreath form  for $.50 and this frame for $.99.  (The only decent prices I found that day...sorry, I'm stopping now)
The frame I'm going to use for another project, what I was after here was the flowers.  I ripped them out, carefully, to use on my wreaths.
Then I wound ribbon around the wreath form, using hot glue to secure it.
For my pages I used an old Harlequin novel that I found in our attic.  (Yes, I did search out the steamy scenes in case you're wondering.  They were pretty mild compared to what I'm used to.  What?  I am simply well-read.)  I cut the pages down a bit because the wreath was so small.
Then I added a second, longer layer.
For the center I printed out a birdcage image from *The Graphics Fairy* on white cardstock.  I crumpled it up and shoved it into the center.  Because I wanted it to look kind of poofy, I put some batting behind it and hot glued cardboard to back it all.
Then I hot glued the flowers on and added a few little birds.
When that was done, it still seemed incomplete, so I glued some pearl string along the inside, and the outside, of the wreath form.  The pearls on the outside string are larger than those on the inside.
Here it is all done:

Do you see the little bird in the flowers?

I was going to show you the other wreath I made in this post, but I think I'll give it a separate post.  Wouldn't want to bog you down with too many pictures!!!

Stupid Hideous New Haircut

ARGH!!!  For weeks now I've been itching to get my hair cut.  It was down past my shoulders and I was sick of it.  I wanted to get it cut short, like this or maybe even shorter:
Kirsten Storms always has such adorable hair!  Love me some Maxie!!  (I'm a huge General Hospital nerd!)  Last July I used this same picture as inspiration and ended up with this:
Nice right?  I thought so too!  When I washed it out and curled it, it even looked like the haircut I wanted.  So this time when I went in, I gave them the same picture.  I did NOT get the same result.  Instead I ended up with this hot mess...
Like the crazy eyes?  Do ya??  Huh??  Yeah, well, I'm REALLY just a wee bit upset about the bangs.  Hello, what am I TWELVE???  ARGH.  I'm so bummed. I went to get this done as a surprise for the hubs while he was at work.  Instead of feeling all cute and sexy, I felt like a big dork.  Still do.  Oh well, at least it's only hair.  It'll grow out.  Hopefully soon.

I'm linking this "real" post up at Not JUST A Housewife's "Get Real" party because what's more real than a hideous haircut documented with horrible cell phone pictures?

Survivor Layouts for Tallyscrapper-Weeks 7 and 8

Lately, for some really weird reason, I just haven't felt like scrapping, but I have to.  One layout every week for Survivor on Tallyscrapper.  That's part of the beauty of this game, it forces me to scrap even when I don't feel like it.  It's not that I'm not inspired, because I am.  The problem is that I put it off until the day the layout is due.  That means that when I get home from work, when I'm already tired, I have to scrap.  Bwah ha ha.  The evils of procrastination.  That being said, I think my layouts the last couple of weeks have been alright!  Not great examples of human creativity, but still pretty darn cute.  Want to see them?  I'll show them to you and you can judge for yourselves.

Week #7
For this week the challenge was to
  1. Use blue and gold
  2. Use "Survivor" in the journaling
  3. Use a clothespin or random piece of wood somewhere on the layout
  4. Have a proper name in the title
So here it is:

Love this picture of my niece.

Week #8
For this week we had to use an ad given to us as inspiration.  It was a cool, colorful ad so that was nice.  We also had to:
  1. Background paper either black or white.
  2. Colors of the layout must be bright, cheerful colors-no neutrals.
  3. Lots of paint.  At least 3 colors, no mists.
  4. Only 1 picture and it must be black & white.
  5. Title must be only one word.
I'll admit, I cranked this one out really fast while I caught up on The Guild Season 3.  It took longer to get the paint to dry than it did to put the whole thing together.  My excuse is that I was super tired.  Falling asleep at the computer tired.  Dang procrastination!!

It's not bad, it's just not what I'd envisioned when I read the challenge last week.  Oh well, maybe that will inspire me to do my layout earlier this week.  Does anyone else out there suffer from procrastination??

Barn Drawer #2!

First I have to say that this drawer was a lot more work than the last one, but it was definitely worth it!  Here's what it looked like when I got it out of the barn and cleaned it off.  I should have taken the picture BEFORE I cleaned it off, but I forgot.
The bottom is particle board , but the other sides are all nice solid wood.  I took the handle off and banged the lock out.  Then I pried the metal piece off the front.
That part took me quite awhile.  The lock was tricky, but I managed to force it out.  Then I sanded everything down and sprayed it with a few coats of white Krylon primer.
I knew I wanted to paint it a robin's egg blue color, but I didn't have any.  So I mixed my own using a Valspar paint sample and some paint we had leftover from painting our kitchen.
It's pretty close.  Even with coating the drawer with primer, I still had to do two coats to the whole drawer.
Then I sanded it down to give it a more distressed look.  This part was waaaay tougher than it was on the other drawer.  I guess because I primered it first.
Then I glazed it up with some Valspar clear glaze mixed with black paint.  I didn't get a good picture of this step because I forgot.
I left the inside of the yellow drawer alone because you could see the wood grain through the paint and I loved that.  Because this drawer had an uninteresting bottom, I decided to add some butterflies.  I cut the butterflies out of two pieces of scrapbooking paper and scanned them into my computer.  Then I flipped them so I'd have some to put on each side.  After I printed them and cut them out, I used Modge Podge to glue them on.  Then I coated the bottom with 2 more coats of Modge Podge to seal it.
I spray painted the handle assembly silver with Krylon paint and put that back on.  Here's the finished product.
It was tough to get the whole thing in the picture!!
This is going in my craft room on my metal rack.
This picture's wicked cool.
So what do you think?  Do you like it??

I'll be linking this project up to the link parties in my sidebar.  Don't forget to enter my giveaway!!  It's going on until the end of the day Sunday April 10th!!

225 Followers? What? Time for a GIVEAWAY!!!!

Okay, I know I said I was going to do this back when I hit 200 followers, but I put it off because I wanted to make something special to giveaway.  Then, by the time I finished it, we were up to 225!  SAHWEET!!  So here it is, a special giveaway for my followers.  (I feel like some kind of cult leader saying that)
The green flower is made from wired ribbon and the gray flowers are rosettes made from a gray satin type material.  There are a total of 6 swarovski crystal beads, three on each gray flower.  The flowers have been stitched together, there's not a single drop of hot glue anywhere on this comb.  I backed the whole thing with gray material taken from a vintage scarf and then sewed the comb on.
The ribbon wrapped around the top of the comb is a re-use.  I think it came from a bottle of perfume or something.
It looks gorgeous on!  I didn't bother trying to take a picture that was suitable for posting, but I definitely tried it on.  The old double mirror trick worked like a charm.

So, there are a bunch of ways to enter!
  1. MANDATORY:  Be a follower of A Very DandoisLion Life.  Leave a comment telling me what sort of event you would wear this to.
  2. "Like" my Facebook page.  Leave a comment saying you did so.
  3. "Favorite" my Etsy shop DandoisLion DeLights.  Leave a comment about which item is your favorite.
  4. Buy an item from my Etsy shop DandoisLion DeLights.  Leave 2 separate comments.
  5. Post the giveaway on Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, or blog it.  Leave a comment for each one that you do.
The giveaway will be open for the weekend and I'll draw the winner on Monday afternoon.

Okay!  Have fun!!!  I really want to thank you all for liking what I do enough to be a follower.  It's so awesome and rewarding and gratifying.  It makes me want to keep creating.  So w00t for all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest Post at Blue Cricket Design!!

This is uber exciting.  Today my Barn Drawer is being featured as the guest post on Blue Cricket Design!  Um hello!  That's so awesome!  Sorry, I got a little jazzed when I found out and I think I'll go float around on some clouds now.  It makes me feel all giddy when people appreciate something I've made, but I'm sure that you're all familiar with that feeling.  Isn't that why, at least partially, we share what we've done?

BTW, I've started on drawer number 2.  She gets her first coat of paint today!  Also, I'll be back later today with 200th follower appreciation giveaway.  Although, I suppose it should be my 216th follower appreciation giveaway.  It's taking me so long to post it, there are bunch more of you now!

More Ribbon Flowers!

This weekend while I was hanging with my fam for my little brother's birthday, I cranked out a couple more ribbon flower hair ties.  I'm seriously thinking about doing some craft shows, so I'm trying to get faster at getting stuff done.  I think it's working.  Unfortunately all of these ribbons are brand new.  No good upcycling, recycling, or just plain cycling.  Sorry.  I did get them for 40% off though, so that's good, right?

This one is a robin's egg kind of blue with a damask flocked print.
 I really love that print!

This ribbon is a sage green-ish color and I LOVE it.

This one, though, is my favorite.  I think.  For right now.  It's an emerald green color and the wire is copper.  In some spots the wire shows through.

They're so pretty and I love the way they look in my hair!  These are all in my etsy shop now, but I'm making some for myself.  Keep your eyes open, I'll be posting giveaway information very soon about my 200th follower appreciation giveaway!!

We've already made it into a gorgeous treasury!
