Hoo Am I?? Today? I'm Sleepy.

NightOwlCrafting

1. What is your favorite magazine?
I don't really read magazines, but we have a "GameInformer" subscription.  Sometimes I read about video games while I'm on the jon.  TMI?  That's part of who I am.  I do love the magazine Adbusters, but I don't read all of that either.
2. What color are your eyes?  Blue
3. Do you go to the dentist on a regular 6 month schedule, or do you put it off?
Yep, every 6 months.  Might as well use the dental insurance I'm paying for, right?  Right.
4. Do you use anything to make your house smell good?
ex: candles, spray,etc...  My sister once said that my house smells like cleaning stuff, coffee, and incense.  She was right.  We have candles and sometimes burn incense, but my sense of smell went bye bye.  I have no idea what the house smells like anymore.  It makes me nervous when people are coming over.
5. Do you have any pets?  2 awesome dogs and 3 awesome cats

Awesome Drawer Re-Do

A couple weeks ago we had 2 whole days where it was warm.  It was glorious, and I went crawling around in the barn to find something to play with.  I needed a project.  Then I found this drawer.
It was all alone, no cabinet, desk, or even another drawer to keep it company.  I brought it inside and promised to give it a new life.

Isn't it pretty??  I love the knob!  I almost kept it the way it was, but I really wanted something with color.  So, I painted it yellow and distressed it.  Here it is painted at the beginning of the distressing.
More distressing.  It's looking good, but I have more in store for it.
Glazing time!!
Here she is all done...
AWESOME!  Love it so, so much.
Even the hubs was impressed, and that's saying something.  I can't wait to get her into my craft room and fill her with all sorts of goodies.  Today I went to the barn to find another project.  Guess what!  I found another drawer!  A different style, different size, and perfect for what I needed it for.  What color do you think I should do the new one in?  It's wooden with a metal front.

Katy Perry Challenges and Survivor=Weird Combo!

Tallyscrapper always has the best challenges around.  These were definitely right up there in my top 10 toughest layouts of all time.  Okay, the first one wasn't because my lyric went perfectly with my subject.  Sorry, getting ahead of myself...

The first Katy Perry challenge was to use an assigned lyric from "Baby You're a Firework".  My lyric was "Make 'em go Oh, OH, OH!", and I'm pretty sure I got that lyric for sharing my Katy Perry dreams with everyone.

Here's the first dream:  I'm going to the bathroom at my parents' house.  (The old one, they've renovated)  Jane Fonda walks in and starts talking to me.  I say, excuse me Jane, I'm going to the bathroom here, do you mind?"  She says "I'm Jane 'bleeping' Fonda, I'll do what I want."  I come back with "I don't care if you ARE Jane 'bleeping' Fonda, I'm going to the bathroom, GET OUT!"  She leaves and immediately Katy Perry walks in.  She starts talking to me about some tickets for a show or something with backstage passes.  I say "Um, Katy, I'm going to the bathroom here."  She says "I don't mind" and keeps talking like we're old pals.  End Scene.

In the second dream I'm telling Katy Perry about the dream I had where she was in the bathroom with me.  She's laughing and thinks it's hilarious.  She says "Yeah, that sounds like something I'd do", and we chat like we're old friends.  End Scene.

The weirdest part about all this is that I don't even listen to her music.  I like a few of her songs, but I don't LISTEN to her.  So weird.  Anyway, for the challenge I had to use that lyric, a cloud or rainbow, and use a certain KP picture for inspiration.  Here's the layout:
I used pics of KP, JF, and me.  Plus my parent's new toilet.  Didn't want to embarrass them by using a pic of the old one.
The journaling is just a recap of the dreams.

The second Katy Perry challenge was TOUGH.  For this one not only did we get assigned a lyric, but it was also part of a bingo challenge.  For the bingo part each square of a bingo card is filled in with some scrappy goodness.  For whatever game you get, you have to use all of those things in your layout.  So I got top and bottom rows.  That meant I had to use: stamp, punches, staples, American Crafts, bingo card, clocks, hearts, neutrals, leaves, and a border punch.  Holy bananas.  My lyric was "Stun me with your lasers".  I found the perfect picture of my sister Kira, and this is what I came up with.
Can you find everything?  I'll admit I doubled up, used my border punch as my punch, and my leaves are on my stamping.
The lasers kind of look like bird doo, but you get the idea anyway.

Then for this week's Survivor layout, we had a tough challenge.  We had to use a 3 word title that started with a Z word.  What?  I know, it was not easy.  We also had to use 2 staples and the color red.  Here's my entry:
The hubs really hates that pic of him in the hammock.  Oh well!!
The pics are of my hubs at his parent's house in Colorado.  That Segway belongs to their neighbor.  He rides it down the mountain to pick up his mail.  Pretty smart since it's at least a mile walk!

This is why I love Tally.  I would never have come up with those layouts without the challenges.  They really help me expand my creativity and I need all the help I can get!!!

How to Make Suet Cakes for your Feathered Friends

One of my favorite projects is making my own suet cakes for the birds.  It's not that I have anything against the ones they sell in the stores.  This is just a really messy, fun project that I can do to use up some stuff that I have in the house.  Did I mention that it's messy?

Here's how to do it.

First gather up your ingredients
Required
Suet (fat-stores around here sell it in its own container, usually about a dollar or so.  I've seen recipes that use shortening or vegetable shortening, but I use suet.)
Bird seed

Optional
Peanut Butter (crunchy or smooth, I use crunchy)
Quick Oats
Chopped fruit (I didn't have any this time, but I've used it in the past)
Stale cereal (The last time I did this I put a cranberry cereal in and the birds went crazy for it.)

Here's a picture of my ingredients:
Now you have to melt the suet.  It's kind of a stinky process, it makes your whole house smell like meat.
It looks gross, doesn't it??  Blech.  Once the suet's melted, you have to strain out the chunks.  To do this I used a flour sifter.  Make sure whatever you use isn't plastic, it WILL melt.  This is something I learned from experience know because I'm smart.
Now, dump the melted suet into a large bowl and add your other ingredients.
I don't measure anything when I'm doing this, I just wing it.  You don't want it to be too runny or too solid.  The peanut butter really helps with this step.  It acts as a kind of adhesive, holding the ingredients together.  Now that it's all mixed up, pour it into whatever you are going to use as molds.  I use those metal containers you get from Chinese take-out.
Pop these bad boys into the freezer until they're solid.  Then you can take them out of the containers and wrap them in aluminum foil or however you want to store them.  I usually keep them in their containers, in the freezer, until I'm ready to put them outside.
I made these bigger than I normally would because I'm going to make a new suet feeder especially for these big blocks.
Pretty cool, right??  This took me probably an hour to do yesterday.  The longest part was melting the suet because it was frozen when I started.  Way to plan ahead Shawna.  What do you think?  Are you going to try it?

Homemaking is for the Birds....Literally.

We have lots of birds out here in the middle of nowhere.  Our yard features about 5 birdhouses (there might be more, I can't remember) and 5, sometimes 6, bird feeders.  We don't have a birdbath because the house is surrounded by creeks that don't freeze, even in the dead of winter.  Every spring I put out a basket of material for the birds to use when building their nests.  Not that they need it out here, but I love seeing my threads in the nests.  I've been hoarding stuff to put out since fall, and was planning to set my basket out sometime in the next couple of weeks.  Then I saw an inspiring tutorial on Sew Many Ways.  Karen posted a tutorial on how to make chicken wire purses to put your birds nest material in!!  I knew I had to do it.  I wanted to start right away, but life got in the way.  Our water heater broke and then we had company over the weekend.  So...this week I totally busted out a roll of chicken wire leftover from last year's garden and got to work.

My chicken wire had a hexagonal shape.  I couldn't figure out how to cut it without having sharp edges, so I embellished it.  I hot glued burlap over the areas I'd have to stick my hand in to fill it.
Of course I had further embellish it.  What can I say?  I like pretty colors.
I used purple and turquoise copper wire to add some flair.  It's expensive stuff, but I already had it on hand.  If you're not going to use the stuff you have, what excuse do you use to buy more??
I even spray painted the perch stick to match my color scheme.  (Thank you Krylon!!)
For the handle I braided some wire and then attached it to the back.  Then I stuffed that bad boy from my hoard of materials and hung it in our Japanese Maple tree near our suet feeder.
There's a bunch more stuff that I can stick in here when it starts to mat together, or the birds take it.
I wanted to use pretty stuff, but I did add some dog hair in for substance.  I know birds love to use dog hair.
 Isn't that blue stick pretty??
It's even prettier from the back.  I hope the birds like it.  I'm thinking that I might make a couple more to give as gifts to some of the bird lovers I know.  Would you appreciate a gift like this or would you feel jipped?

Yeah!  We got featured at Under The Table And Dreaming and Luxe Boulevard!  Awesomesauce!!
