The National Wildlife Federation sponsors a program called the Great American Backyard Campout. It's a program that raises money to help connect kids to outdoor programs and helps promote awareness about the benefits of getting kids outside. We did it here at the Dandoislion for the first time last year and had a blast. This year, I think, it was even more fun!! We had a total of 14 kids and 16 adults here for different portions of the weekend. Some folks only stayed a few hours, others stayed overnight or for the whole weekend.
We had a lot of fun stuff for everyone to do. We searched the woods for firewood and caught some wildlife to look at.
Those are just a few of the newts we found in the woods. All of them were released though, no pets! We saw lots of little snakes.
My husband caught one near the barn so the kids could get a closer look. We also saw a snake, in the creek, eating a fish!! It was the craziest thing I've ever seen in my yard! My camera, of course, was inside at the time.
We also climbed trees, made up battle forms, and fought imaginary bad guys.
We had a water balloon fight and a completely epic slip and slide.
We took everyone on a hike to the waterfalls near our house.
There was some swimming, rock climbing, and dam building while we were there.
The walk back to the house was nice too. We had many different groups strung out along the road. It was almost like a parade.
And of course we played in the mud and hung out by the campfire.
We also laughed, talked, watched fireflies in the pitch black night, caught more frogs than I can count, roasted s'mores, ate like piglets, and had more fun than I can really describe. I think the kids AND parents agree on that one.
Thank you to the National Wildlife Federation and The Great American Backyard Campout for inspiring us to spend more time together and get outdoors!
